Maira Elahi

I work with a research group affiliated with and based at Harvard to use machine learning calculations using exoplanet data to calculate star luminosity and some other cool things to map the data! We train models to sift through the data, identify important patterns, clean the data again, and record connections that might otherwise be missed by our human senses. My project here is almost finished, and I'll soon be presenting my results to a panel of professors and researchers!

I work with another research group here on interdisciplinary research across the political, economic, and legal landscape. My team and I are currently developing a machine-learning prototype to mitigate the negative effects of climate change. Still at the ideation and development stage.

I work with the research team at OCTO by publishing briefs and articles on relevant themes regarding OCTO's focus on work-life balance and productivity. I also work closely with the development team, and we are currently spearheading marketing for the upcoming beta launch of the app. OCTO empowers you to achieve your goals and become your best self. Previously on the front-end and back-end team, I worked with web and database development through exposure and work in the following languages and syntaxes: Laravel, PHP, React, Angular, HTML, CSS, Bootstrap, WordPress, and SASS, and then worked individually or in smaller teams to apply them appropriately to the small and specific front end and back end projects within the 2 larger contexts of 1) migration of the building-U website and 2) a redesign of our annual virtual game $4YT (Dollars 4 Your Thoughts). Now, on the data privacy team, I am working with Rogers Canada and Knowledgeflow.

Working with a team of students at The University of Waterloo to research CNNs and apply them in the context of early breast cancer detection. Also, working on developing an AI system that can translate text from one language to another, as well as working on a research project to develop methods for detecting and mitigating bias in AI models, with a focus on applications in sensitive areas. Separate project; working with Dr. Abul Quasem Al-Amin on climate research w/ its intersections in deep learning.

Founded TIVEA. Working on developing the community, building the app, and publishing our e-book series. Short-form for The Creative Youth, in an era where our attention spans are so short and our brains are overstimulated, we are developing TIVEA, a bite-sized, Lilliputian education social network, in an effort to restore this generation's attention spans, motivation, and passion for learning.

AI Vulnerability Database (AVID) is a knowledge base of failure modes for Artificial Intelligence (AI) models, datasets, and systems. The goals of AVID are to build out a functional taxonomy of potential AI harms across the coordinates of security, ethics, and performance, house full-fidelity information (metadata, harm metrics, measurements, benchmarks, and mitigation techniques if any) on evaluation use cases of a harm (sub)category, evaluate systems, models, and datasets. Presenting at the upcoming MOZFEST and helped develop a response to the NIST AI RISK MANAGEMENT FRAMEWORK.

LAION, as a non-profit organization, provides datasets, tools and models to liberate machine learning research. By doing so, we encourage open public education and more environment-friendly use of resources by reusing existing datasets and models. Building an Open-Source ChatGPT on the Bot, ML, and Data & Safety Team. Maintaining a repository of high-quality instruction data and developing a reference implementation of an Open Source ChatGPT model.

Documenting, modelling, configuring, and running models w/ MESA on types of stars and planetary systems to visualize and analyze the output data using tools such as Gnuplot, IDL, and Python to draw conclusions about the evolution of the star and/or planetary system.

Interacting with the government of Ontario, drafting policies, debating in the Chamber, and meeting + networking with key figures in our province's legislature!

Invited to the Lunar New Year Celebrations to meet and interact with key figures in the government of Canada, recognized for our work with The Canadian Youth Champions and our anti-racism + ocean racism framework.

Study: Digital Rights Concerns in Facial Recognition. Working on the elaboration of an Open Gender Data Guide for a non-expert audience to build bridges between open data experts and organizations dealing with gender issues without data knowledge. The aim of the guide is to empower activists, NGO professionals and civil servants without technical expertise by providing them with language, tools and means to produce, analyze and use data from a feminist intersectional perspective.

Drafted a research paper on education barriers relating to algorithmic bias; soon to be published in The Journal of Education Inequity.

Supplementing the social media team and creating content across all social media channels for the multi-million dollar web3-focused incubator for creatives. A global media company and creative house creating pathways to wealth for creatives of all kinds.

Worked in close partnership with The University of British Columbia, University of Tehran, and Islamic Azad University using machine learning for cancer research. Projects included Breast Cancer Classification via Self-Knowledge Distillation, Transfer Learning, and Feature Fusion Models + Predicting TNM Stage in Head and Neck Cancer using Multi-Modality Fusion Coupled with Deep Learning Techniques.
